UNTECR 2011 Successfully Held in Kyoto, Japan

Dec. 1, 2011 - Jointly initiated by ACerS, GRA, ALAFAR and TARJ, the biennial worldwide congress - UNITECR 2011 (The 12th Unified International Technical Congress on Refractories) undertaken by TARJ was successfully held in Kyoto, Japan, on Oct. 30- Nov. 2, with the theme “Refractories-Technology to Sustain Global Environment”.
It is also the third time for Japan to undertake this event after that happened in 1995, Kyoto and 2003, Osaka. Yet, this meeting is doomed to be a significant one as it is conducted after the great earthquake and tsunami attacked northeastern Japan on Mar. 11 this year.
Nearly 700 delegates from more than 30 countries attended this meeting as about 250 papers received, of which around 80 papers were from Japan, ranking the top place and followed by China, approximately 40 papers, the paper contents include the following main points:
(1) Refractories Applications on Iron & Steel, Non-ferrous, Glass, Ceramics, Cement & Lime,Petrochemical, Waste Incineration and Other industries;
(2) Environmental Protection and Recycling of Refractories;
(3) Development in Refractories Basic Science;
(4) Refractories Produced by Nanometer Technology;
(5) Refractory Applications of Ceramics;
(6) Selection and Application of Raw Materials;
(7) Engineering Systems and Design of Refractories;
(8) New Advances of Refractories in Manufacturing, Installation and Equipment;
(9) Process Control, Quality Control and Quality Assurance in Producing Refractories;
(10) New Testing Methods and Development;
(11) Refractories Education and Training.
In addition, the article named “Introduction of Ecology Friendly Refractories – Discussion Industrial Furnace and Global Environmental Protection Based on Historical Review” written by Dr. Kiyoshi Sugita, academician of Japanese Academy of Engineering, senior technical adviser of Nippon Steel Corporation and distinguished life member of UNITECR, was issued in full text in the meeting.
At the opening ceremony, president of this meeting as well as chairman of TARJ , Tsuneo Kayama, made the welcome speech, followed by Norio Katsuyama from Nippon Steel Corporation with a presentation on “Development and evolution of the Japanese Steel Industry”, Jicheng He from Northeastern University of China on “Relationship of Chinese Iron & Steel Industry and Global Financial Situation” and Shinjiro KANAE from University of Tokyo on “Global Hydrological Cycle, Global Water Resources, Water Footprint and Sustainable Development under Global Changes”.
At the banquet closing ceremony, three members were newly elected as the Distinguished Life Member (DLM) of UNITECR while another 11 DLMs presented this meeting were honored as Senior Contributors Award. What’s more, in order to encourage and recognize the creativity and excellence of younger engineers and researchers (less than 35 years old) in the refractories field, Excellent Presentation Award was also given out to appropriate lecturers.
