Armadale obtains environmental approval for Mahenge Liandu Graphite Project

Apr. 1, 2021 - Armadale Capital has secured environmental approval for the production of natural flake graphite from the Mahenge Liandu Graphite Project in south-east Tanzania.

The is located in the Ulanga district, approximately 10km away from Mahenge and approximately 300km south-west of Morogoro.

The environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) approval from Tanzania’s National Environment Management Council (NEMC) marks the final step required in the mining licence application process.

Armadale will now submit the mining licence to the country’s Department of Energy and Minerals for approval.

Armadale chairman Nick Johansen said: “Armadale has made considerable progress over this past year continually making steps forward in derisking Mahenge Liandu to advance through development towards production at a time where global demand for graphite products is set to rise exponentially especially in spherical graphite manufacturing for the EV market.

“Our recent successful testwork in both Chinese and Australian labs have demonstrated encouraging results that high purity graphite concentrate from our Project is suitable for the battery anode market.”

The firm is undertaking individual workstreams relating to testing, offtake, financing and detailed design engineering for the project.

The Mahenge Liandu high-grade, open-pit graphite mining project is planned to be developed in two stages, with the first stage expected to produce 60,000tpa of graphite concentrate in the first four years of operation.

In the second phase, mine’s production capacity will increase to 90,000tpa during the remaining 13 years of its operational life.
